Andy Spira

With his series on the Kashmir conflict in 2010, Andy Spyra ventured into new territory in documentary photography. In striking black-and-white images, he captures tense and emotion-filled civil war situations, while also directing our attention to the language of the images themselves. The ordinary, perhaps already too frequently shown subject becomes an intimate moment in Spyra’s work. His photography brings to life the unavoidable encounter with an event that disturbs us and touches us, even when it—like in his new series Bosnia – Aftermath of a Genocide—captures the silence that ominously settles over the landscape in his compositions.
