Harald Braun

Patch

In an extensive series of works, Harald Braun uses and combines two materials that could hardly be more contrasting: fabric and concrete. From these, he creates floor and wall objects that possess both sculptural and painterly qualities. The large-format tapestries – patchworks of fabric panels sewn together in various patterns – imitate the principles of abstract painting and at the same time function as ‘portraits’ of people or as expressions of the ‘zeitgeist’.

In contrast, the wall pieces composed of cloths, blankets or skins, into which concrete forms are poured and cast, focus on gravity, tension and weight, but also on the different, specific behaviour and reactions of the materials to each other. The hard and the soft, the heavy and the light, the rigid and the fluid come together and influence each other. For the space at the Kunstverein Friedrichshafen, Harald Braun has created a large-format textile mural that pays homage to the artists Balzac, Siegfried & Roy, and Gilbert & George.
