They’ve made us Ghosts
In 2015, photographer Christoph Oeschger was commissioned to photograph refugees stranded along the Balkan route. He quickly realized that journalistic photography struggles to capture the complexity of the topic of migration. They’ve Made Us Ghosts is a photographic attempt to offer a different approach—one that challenges stereotypical press imagery.
The result is a multifaceted photography project, now presented as an exhibition for the first time. In a multilayered narrative structure, Oeschger explores the relationship between individual and state within the refugee camp in Calais. Through his photographs, he documents the architecture of the camp, the security technologies in use, and the living conditions of the people residing there—thus telling the story of the internal European border at Calais.
