Every now and then, rather rarely, I experience a colour impression in nature that far outshines other, everyday colour experiences. Such colour interplay moves me, inspires me, and gives me a glimpse of the harmony that is possible in our world. It is usually hidden, not at all commonplace, but the joy of a rare moment can reveal it to the attentive observer. It can come from a special cloud formation or a particular light, or the blossoming of flowers, the sprouting of leaves after the barrenness of winter. In any case, it is not lasting, short-lived, as if sketched, ready, as it were, for the next gust of wind to carry it away. Such fleeting matter inspires me from time to time, and I seek to capture it. The attempt to depict it, this natural beauty, the grace of life, is doomed to failure. Cézanne knew this well and therefore sought to create a harmony in his paintings that paralleled nature. In this way, I too can leave the forms I see to life. My nature, to which I can transfer my experience, is the nature of the image.” Leopold Schropp, Die Farben schließlich… 1995
